What Did They Mean By That? - A Dictionary of Historical Terms
for Genealogists
by Paul Drake, J.D. Heritage Books, Inc., 1994
1540-E Pointer Place, Bowie, MD 20716 (301) 390-7709
draw knife, drawknife: a bladed tool with handles on both ends, so designed as to cut when the tool is drawn toward the body, e.g., Every carpenter and cabinetmaker had drawknives.
riddle: a coarse sieve
iron, irons, smoothers: the expression "to iron" was unknown early, and only in the 20th century have we "ironed" clothes; throughout history we have "smoothes" cloth with "clothes smoothers" made of iron (usually) or brass.
wether: a castrated male sheep less than a year old, so rendered to improve the quality of the meat.
brindle: a color of an animal, usually a dog or horse, dark over gray or buff.
skep: very early, a beehive shaped like an inverted basket and made of coiled rope tied together to prevent its collapse; early, usually round, 1/2 bushel wooden or reed basket, often with handles, e.g.,Early depictions of beehives almost always show them as skeps.
scaps, skeps, gums: hives of bees
greatcoat, great coat: a large, heavy coat designed to be worn over other clothes in extreme weather.
can: originally, a cup made of tin or copper, e.g., The cans listed in the inventory probably were drinking cups.
cooley can: a ten- to twenty-quart metal container for cold water, having an insert into which whole milk was poured for cooling and so causing the cream to rise to the top for removal, sometimes with a spigot at the bottom to draw off the milk. [Maybe this is what was meant in John Morrison's inventory where it listed a cooller.]
steel: unlike now, hardened sharpening rods having a lightly roughened surface for sharpening knives and other cutting edges.
