Subject: Ancestors of James CAMPBELL (about 1659/60-after 1708)

Re: Earls and Dukes of Argyll, and book, 'Heraldry of the Campbells'

I would like information about any descendants of Colonel James CAMPBELL, son of Archibald CAMPBELL (1629-1685), 9th Earl of Argyll. I have the article, "Family of George Thomas Wharton Collins" by Mrs. W. F. Collins, which concerns a descendant of Thomas WHARTON, born August 1691, died 1746 in the Battle of Culloden, son of James CAMPBELL and Mary WHARTON. He married second a Miss COLLINS in 1730.

Mary Wharton is said to be the daughter of Sir George Wharton, although one account has Philip Wharton. She was a ward of Thomas Marquis of Wharton and of Colonel Bierly; she later married Colonel Bierly. I am trying to find these Wharton ancestors and also ancestors of Mary Hinton, second wife of Thomas Wharton Collins, and Ann Corran, wife of William Wharton Collins.

If James Campbell studied at Glasgow in 1678 then it is more likely that he was born 1660, and not 1667.

GENEALOGY

Re: Ancestors of Daniel Stevenson, born 1966

Through maternal line, descendant of Archibald Campbell 1629-1685, 9th Earl of Argyll, who is related to King James V of Scotland, King Henry VII of England, and others.

Through paternal line, descendant of King Henry II through Sanford line. Another paternal line is descended from German immigrants who lived in the Osnabruck / Hannover region of Germany, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio about 1834.

It is interesting to note that the present British Royal Family has ancestors who were from Hanover, Germany, in a direct line (hence term, 'House of Hanover'.)

This chart is not for publication, but it might provide some clues for further research.

Re: Ancestors of James Campbell (born about 1660)

DESCENDANTS OF KING HENRY II OF ENGLAND (1133-1189) (CAMPBELL AND SANFORD)

The ancestry of King James V of Scotland (1512-1542) can be traced back to King Henry II of England (1133-1189). King James V of Scotland is an ancestor of Mary Stuart (1628-1668) who married Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll (1629-1685).

Both of my parents are descendants of King Henry II... one from his son, King John 1167-1216, and the other from his son William de Longespee, Earl of Salisbury 1173-1226.

The Bement family's Sanford genealogy on the internet (ancestors and descendants of Thomas Andrew Sanford 1607-1681; descendants of William the Conqueror) includes 31 descendants of King Henry II who are my ancestors. The Sanford line is descended from William de Longespee through the La Zouche, de Holand and Botilier families. Descendant Abigail Sanford 1714-1804 married Aaron Parsons 1711-1791. Ann Parsons m. Smith Miller, Eliphas Miller m. Esther Doud, Jerusha Miller m. Ransom Williamson, Isaac Williamson m. Adeline Guernsey, Amelia Williamson m. Gillette Stevenson who was my great-grandfather.
