& NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY
WebEdition 42 / September 2000 Produced Bi-Monthly
Welcome to the forty-second WebEdition of The Magazine.
This is the final online Magazine which will contain articles - apart from the second and final part of 'By Hill and Shore' - from the hard-copy Magazine. I have taken this step after much thought and, until a decision is forthcoming from the Antiquarian Society, so the situation shall remain. I still intend to continue posting those articles supplied by you great folks out there and, of course, the 'Wee Drams' and 'Surnames and Searchers Archive' pages. E-mail me with any Magazine articles or input - I can read most kind of files - or snailmail me at :

For those of you out there in the big wide world who weren't aware of it, there is a weekly publication in Campbeltown called the'Campbeltown Courier.' It is known - in fun - to locals as 'The two minute silence' and it is sometimes said of it that, "Ye could throw it up in the err, an read it on the wey doon!" That said, however, the Courier is a 'must buy' for most of the adult population of the town - one never knows what one might miss! It is, in its own way, an excellent publication, and serves its public well. It has a letters page which 'welcomes letters of no more than 200 words for publication'. The snailmail address is, Letters, The Campbeltown Courier, Main and Longrow South, Campbeltown, Argyll, PA28 6AE, Scotland. The fax number is 01586 553006, and the e-mail address is courier@obantimes.co.uk. Why not drop the Editor a line?
I have just read - in one non-stop sitting (I couldn't put it down!) - the latest book by my old friend Freddy Gillies. Entitled 'In Campbeltown Once More', it is an evocative look back at the time of Freddy's childhood in Campbeltown in the '50's and '60's. This book is the third he has written and has had published. The other two are: 'Life with the Coal Tar' - Stories from Campbeltown's West Coast Fisherfolk, and 'Life on God's Island' - Stories from the Inner Hebridean Island of Gigha.
Until the next time,
Ca' canny
