BEFORE SHE WENT TO ORMSARY:
SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN
MARY MACNIELL'S KILLEAN
1. MacNiells who lived in Killean Parish,
as revealed in the Old Parish Registers. They are arranged, as far as is possible,
into family groups.
2. People of Note,
again as revealed in the Old Parish Registers. Every now and then, a person's
vocation is mentioned in these records. These people are professionals, and
tradesmen, although some people are revealed to be "Tenants" and "Cotters".
It is notable that Niel MacNiell, who I strongly suspect of being Mary's brother,
is identified
first as a "Taylor" and then as a "Tenant". Furthermore,
his wife, Kate Watson, came from
Claongart. which makes it probable that she was related to one of the Parish's
Elders in
1805: Robert Watson in Claongart.
3. A'Chleit:
This is information regarding the "new church", consisting mainly
of names of Killean's "men of standing".
The Apportionment of the church pews is an indication, in feet and inches, of
the relative importance of the heritors.
Also, the Killean Ministers of the Parish would have had a central role in Killean's
life Hector Lang was baptized by the Reverend Donald MacDonald. It seems that
his mother, Mary, was baptized by the Reverend Robert Thomson.
4. Land Owners.
These people comprise the important landowing class of Killean Parish. It does
not presume to be complete, as it is derived only from the Old Parish Register.
