The Town House Main Street, viewed from Kirk Street. One of Scotland’s finest
town houses, designed by John Douglas For the Council in 1758—1760. It also
doubled as the town’s prison. The original spire was built of wood and replaced
with the present imposing stone one by a local builder John Brown, In 1778.

"This is the first publication of a truly comprehensive book
about Campbeltown, bringing together in eclectic style the fascinating story of
an extraordinary town and its people.
Much of what you will read here is appearing for the first time, and of the more
than 200 pictures and maps many are hitherto unpublished. A significant number
of photographs from the nationally important MacGrory Collection is a notable
feature.
The contributing authors are all acknowledged experts in their fields, and in
their writing show their affection for a unique and very special area
This book was commissioned and organised by the Kintyre Civic
Society, as a celebration of the tercentenary of Campbeltown’s status as a Royal
Burgh.
The Society was founded in 1985 under the aegis of the Scottish Civic Trust with
the object of trying to protect and stimulate interest in the natural and built
environments of the Kintyre peninsula.
Its achievements have included two floodlighting schemes, various exhibitions,
and the biennial organisation of a Doors Open Day inviting the public to explore
selected buildings of interest. This book is its most ambitious project to
date."
