Hello I really liked your article on Major John Campbell. I am researching my Campbells and Principal Neil is my 6 x grt grandfather, and Duncan his son my 5th x great grandfather and Duncan's daughter my 4 x grt grandmother. I would like to find out how I can go further back in time perhaps though Neil's mother Henrietta, or other Campbell and relations that are for sure related to Neil. I would like to know if even if Neil is not the 8th or 9th Earl's child is he related to them in any way? I found the description very
confusing regarding the various possibilities, I can not help in the mystery of Neil's father and the Clenarys etc and the who's who of it all.

It is a bit aggravating I can not go back further in time for my research. You mentioned some sort of Alphabet of all the family members, like a dictionary. Is there some way it can be emailed to be or can I send away for this information to you?

As Duncan married what I think is his 2nd cousin Rebecca Campbell on Jamaica, I feel there are a lot of Campbell connections to work through. And Henrietta Campbell marrying Neil Campbell is another double Campbell marriage.

I am new at this research and would appreciate any tips or info on back issues that may talk of this family; as far back; the Ardkinglas and Auchinbreck etc. I hear as well there was a Sir John Stewart, illegitimate son of ROBERT III who's grand daughter Margaret Stewart married a Campbell and was granted the Auchenbreck lands...also some Huntly (Seton-Gordon) marriages to my direct Campbells.

Thank you for any tips, sincerely
David in Canada.

I replied to David:

Hello David,

Thanks for your very interesting email. It's always good to hear from readers of the online Magazine.

You are aware, I hope, that some of the articles in the Kintyre Mag are taken from the hard-copy, biannual Kintyre Antiquarian and Natural History Society Magazine? Although neither the hard-copy - nor the online - Mag are predominantly genealogical publications, I'm always happy to help where I can. To that end, I'll post your query in the Wee Drams page of the next online issue due up in January.

You could also write to the hard-copy Magazine editor - Angus Martin - or even send a letter to the Campbeltown Courier via their website.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say, "You mentioned some sort of Alphabet of all the family members, like a dictionary". On the front page of the online edition at www.KintyreMag.co.uk there are links to my 'Surnames and Searchers Archives'. There is a lot in their about Campbells.

I hope that's been of some help to you, David. If there is anything else I can do - don't hesitate to e-me. Also, if you feel like sharing any of your research with the Mag readers, as I always say - I have a page waiting with your name on it!

If you're hankering for a few views of Scotland including Kintyre and Campbeltown environs, have a look here: www.members.aol.com/KintyreMag/june2004/

All the very best to you and yours,

Ian

And back from David:

Hey Ian how are you?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I realize it is busy times for all. I would really like to post my finding and share anything with readers and get response, in the future. After the holidays I would to put together a chart based on what you have written. As I am new at this I can use it as leads and guidelines. The name Pennymore is the first time I have ever come across it. I am not sure if it is a name or a place or both???
That is exciting in itself. I thought Jean was just another Campbell. As these relations are 200 years ago, not all will be learned by me, but I really am totally interested in researching all angles of their lives. Dan Byrnes of the "Blackheath Connection" will be writing to me too soon, he has just touched based today as well. You must know about his work ?

I have no problem buying or subscribing to any of your magazines, but I am totally just involved with genealogy and would prefer to buy back issues that may pertain to my line. I loved the photography of the different sites and can share picture of my local area with you too...I have 1000s of shots I have take, and many graveyard monuments too.

This is the quote regarding 'lists' from your article:

I am much indebted to Dr Lorne Campbell of London for giving me many references and to Mrs Inez M. McIntyre of Glasgow University Library. Papers which may be referred to are "Alphabetical List of the Campbells of Clenary and Pennymore", W.D. Campbell, 1875 in the Library of the Society of Genealogists (which unfortunately does not go back beyond the Principal) and an "Account of Clan Iver" by Peter Colin Campbell (1873) which states, probably correctly, that Jean Campbell of the Pennymore family married an older brother of Major John and erroneously that Major John succeeded him in Clenarie. We have seen that the successor was Archibald who was followed by Principal Neil.

I am interested to know if you own this list or any accounts of these people, and would like to buy photocopies off you and if you have the time for you to go over an emailed chart or two in the future.

Okay I have to wrap presents, I have spent so much energy looking into my Campbells I have lost track of all time and reality!

Have a Magnificent Christmas and New Year and write me when you can.

David

And more:

Hi Ian, I have forwarded your article to historian Dan Byrnes and no doubt he will contact you in the near future.

I do not know Dan, but the few letters we have exchanged have been charming...I believe we must open the channels of communication and more truths will be learned and I can maybe figure out who Neil Campbell's parents are! After all I can get no further back if I never know, it is a personal thing, those ancestral roots.

Perhaps you can convince Dan to publish some of Blackheath Connection in one of your journals??? I have assisted him with a few bits of personal family info and sent him a picture of Sutton Place, the home, Duncan Campbell's 2nd wife Mary grew up in and her child inherited, my half relations. I have the original Litho and scanned it for Dan... you can see it in his section First Campbells on Jamaica..

Anyway it is Christmas and mine finished a couple of hours ago. I think...I have received 2 versions of Mutiny on the Bounty, and will progress with that shortly...

Merry Christmas, David

I replied:

Hello again David,

Once again, thank you for your email. I look forward to hearing from Dan Byrnes.

I'd just like to make it clear, though, that the articles belong - in the main - to the hard-copy Kintyre Antiquarian Society, and not to me.

All the very best for the New Year,

Ian

And from David:

Hello Ian and thank you,

Then if you are not the author is he/she available to get in touch with?

I only ask as they are my direct ancestors and there was a lot of material covered.

Sincerely, David
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

And finally:

Hello David,

My best advice would be to write to Angus Martin - the editor of the hard-copy Magazine - requesting an address for the writer of the articles in which you're interested.

He [Angus] prefers snailmail and has asked that I don't divulge his e-address. His snailmail address is on the front page of the online Magazine.

All the best,

Ian
